EARTH HOUR

Dear All, Greetings from Sai Anugraha.

"EARTH HOUR"...a word we hear very often these days. Earth Hour is held on the last Saturday of March annually. Just wanted to share few details about EARTH HOUR and also wanted to request Sai Anugraha family members to be part of it.

Earth Hour - History

Earth Hour was launched in Sydney, Australia in 2007, where 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour. Just a year later, Earth Hour reached 370 cities and towns in more than 35 countries across 18 time zones, and the campaign shifted from a ‘Sydney Event’ to a ‘Global Sustainability Movement’. Since then, every year Earth Hour sets new standards and breaks its own records on mass participation and support.

2010 received participation from a record 1.3 billion individuals across 4616 cities in 128 countries globally. Notable landmarks like Acropolis in Greece, Eiffel Tower in Paris, Hiroshima Peace Gardens in Japan, and Pyramids in Egypt switched off in support.

2011 was a memorable year in the history of the campaign, as it marked a new phase, with supporters going beyond the hour by committing to sustainable action all year round. A record 1.8 billion individuals across more than 5200 cities in 135 countries participated by switching off lights, and pledging to imbibe environment friendly practices into everyday life to benefit the planet.

Why get involved?

Earth Hour is a unique opportunity for individuals, groups, businesses and governments to do something positive for the environment. It is not just about saving energy for that one hour, but it symbolizes the first step in the direction of adopting environment friendly activities into everyday life, which will lead the way towards a cleaner environment and sustainable lifestyle.

Earth Hour 2012 will take place on Saturday 31 March at 8.30PM (local time) to 9.30PM, celebrate your action for the planet with the people of world by switching off your lights for an hour, then go beyond the hour.

These are basic things we know and should follow daily in addition to being part of EARTH HOUR

  • Switch off CPU before leaving for the day. Switch off the conference room lights while leaving the room.
  • Take print outs only if needed and print on both sides of the paper.
At Home
  • Love the Nature.
  • A single tree will absorb 1 TON of CO2 over its lifetime. Hence plant more trees.
  • Walk, cycle, car-pool or take public transport more often. You will save 1 KG of CO2 for every 3.5km you don't drive.
  • Keeping your tyre inflated properly can improve mileage by more than 3%. Every litre of petrol saved keeps 3 KG of CO2 out of atmosphere!!
  • Turn off your TV, DVD player, Stereo, Air Conditioner and Computer when you are not using them will save you thousands of KGs of CO2 a year.
  • Use water sparingly. Do not waste Water.
  • Using your own cloth bag instead of plastic or paper bags reduce waste and requires no additional energy.
